Term Life Insurance Rates at 50: What You Will Pay

In short

At 50, a healthy non-smoker pays about $122 a month (man) or $100 a month (woman) for $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance with Nectar Term, as an estimate. A 10-year term costs about 28 percent less, a 30-year term about 45 percent more, and $1 million costs less than twice the $500,000 price. Waiting until 55 raises the same coverage to about $198 a month.

At 50 the preferred price for $500,000 over 20 years is about $122 a month, close to double the price at 45, and a 15-year term to retirement is often the smarter buy. The table below shows Nectar Term estimates at 50 for three coverage amounts and three term lengths, in the preferred non-tobacco class. Every figure is an estimate; the final premium is set by the issuing insurer during underwriting.

Women pay about 18 percent less than men at every age because they live longer on average. Published averages from NerdWallet and MoneyGeek for comparable applicants fall in the same range; our full guide to term life insurance cost explains what sits behind the numbers.

What moves the price at 50

Prices roughly double between 45 and 50 and again by 55 as claim odds rise. The remedies are the ones you control: buy now rather than later, buy the amount your plan actually needs rather than a round number, and choose the term that ends when the need ends. Health class still matters: standard adds 40 to 50 percent, tobacco roughly doubles the price.

No-exam underwriting is still available at 50 for clean records, usually up to $1 million. An exam is more common at larger amounts and when records show more than one condition; it is free and done at home.

Which term length to choose at 50

Most 50-year-olds need coverage to retirement, not to 80. A 15-year term reaches 65 at about 15 percent less than 20 years; a 10-year term covers a mortgage with a decade left at 28 percent less. Coverage to 70 or 75 is available but costs a great deal more and is rarely needed once the mortgage is paid and children are independent. If you are not sure how much coverage you need, the coverage calculator builds the number from your mortgage, income and family, and the Nectar Term application shows your price, approval odds and expected decision time before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

How much is term life insurance at 50?

About $122 a month for a man and $100 for a woman for $500,000 over 20 years in the preferred class, as an estimate. A 15-year term is about $104.

Is a 10-year or 15-year term better at 50?

Match it to the need: 10 years for a mortgage with a decade left, 15 years to reach retirement at 65. Both cost much less than 20 or 30 years.

Can a 50-year-old get life insurance without an exam?

Yes, with clean prescription and driving records, typically up to $1 million. Larger amounts or several conditions make an exam more likely.

Why is the price so much higher than at 40?

Claim odds rise faster after 45. The premium you lock in today does not rise again for the whole term.
