Term Life Insurance Rates at 60: What You Will Pay

In short

At 60, a healthy non-smoker pays about $324 a month (man) or $266 a month (woman) for $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance with Nectar Term, as an estimate. A 10-year term costs about 28 percent less, a 30-year term about 45 percent more, and $1 million costs less than twice the $500,000 price.

Sixty is the top of our issue range, and $500,000 over 20 years runs about $324 a month in the preferred class; a 10-year term for the amount you actually need is what most 60-year-olds buy. The table below shows Nectar Term estimates at 60 for three coverage amounts and three term lengths, in the preferred non-tobacco class. Every figure is an estimate; the final premium is set by the issuing insurer during underwriting.

Women pay about 18 percent less than men at every age because they live longer on average. Published averages from NerdWallet and MoneyGeek for comparable applicants fall in the same range; our full guide to term life insurance cost explains what sits behind the numbers.

What moves the price at 60

At 60 the price reflects both age and the exam, which is more likely than at any younger age. A 10-year term costs 28 percent less than 20 years, and sizing the policy to a real number, the mortgage balance plus a few years of income for a spouse plus final expenses, usually matters more than anything else. Prices in the table assume the preferred class; the application shows your estimated odds before you apply.

Expect an exam at 60 for most amounts above a few hundred thousand dollars; it is free, done at home, and often the reason an applicant lands in a better class than the records suggested. Have your medication list, your doctor's name and recent lab results ready.

Which term length to choose at 60

Ten years covers a mortgage ending at 70 and the gap until a pension or Social Security survivor benefit starts. Fifteen years is available at about 15 percent more than ten and suits people with a younger spouse. Twenty years is possible but rarely the best use of the premium at 60. If you are not sure how much coverage you need, the coverage calculator builds the number from your mortgage, income and family, and the Nectar Term application shows your price, approval odds and expected decision time before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

How much is term life insurance at 60?

About $324 a month for a man and $266 for a woman for $500,000 over 20 years in the preferred class, as an estimate. A 10-year term is about $233 for a man.

Can a 60-year-old get a 20-year term?

Yes, Nectar Term issues 20-year terms at 60. A 10- or 15-year term is usually the better match for the years a spouse or mortgage still needs cover.

Will I need a medical exam at 60?

Probably, for most amounts. It is free and can lower your price by placing you in a better class than your records alone would.

Is there an alternative if I am declined?

Yes: guaranteed-issue or simplified-issue policies for smaller amounts, usually with a two- to three-year graded benefit. Our application shows approval odds before you apply, so a decline is rarely a surprise.
