Term Life Insurance Rates at 45: What You Will Pay

In short

At 45, a healthy non-smoker pays about $70 a month (man) or $58 a month (woman) for $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance with Nectar Term, as an estimate. A 10-year term costs about 28 percent less, a 30-year term about 45 percent more, and $1 million costs less than twice the $500,000 price. Waiting until 50 raises the same coverage to about $122 a month.

At 45 term life costs about $70 a month for $500,000 over 20 years in the preferred class, and health class now moves the price more than the next five years of age do. The table below shows Nectar Term estimates at 45 for three coverage amounts and three term lengths, in the preferred non-tobacco class. Every figure is an estimate; the final premium is set by the issuing insurer during underwriting.

What moves the price at 45

From 45 on, the difference between preferred and standard is often larger than the difference between 45 and 50. Blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, A1C and family history are all in play. Buying now, before the next checkup turns up something, is the single biggest lever on price; the second is placing the application with the insurer whose rules treat your profile best, which is what Nectar does.

No-exam coverage remains available at 45 up to $1 million to $2 million for clean records. An exam becomes more likely if records show several conditions or the amount is large; it is free and can improve your class.

Which term length to choose at 45

Twenty years covers you to 65, which lines up with most retirement plans and the end of most mortgages. A 15-year term costs about 15 percent less and suits people whose mortgage and children's education will be done by 60. Thirty years is available to 75 but expensive; most 45-year-olds are better served by the right amount over 20 years. If you are not sure how much coverage you need, the coverage calculator builds the number from your mortgage, income and family, and the Nectar Term application shows your price, approval odds and expected decision time before you apply.
