Term Life Insurance Rates at 40: What You Will Pay

In short

At 40, a healthy non-smoker pays about $47 a month (man) or $38 a month (woman) for $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance with Nectar Term, as an estimate. A 10-year term costs about 28 percent less, a 30-year term about 45 percent more, and $1 million costs less than twice the $500,000 price. Waiting until 45 raises the same coverage to about $70 a month.

At 40 the price curve has bent: $500,000 over 20 years runs about $47 a month in the preferred class, roughly 40 percent more than at 35, and the gap widens every year from here. The table below shows Nectar Term estimates at 40 for three coverage amounts and three term lengths, in the preferred non-tobacco class. Every figure is an estimate; the final premium is set by the issuing insurer during underwriting.

Women pay about 18 percent less than men at every age because they live longer on average. Published averages from NerdWallet and MoneyGeek for comparable applicants fall in the same range; our full guide to term life insurance cost explains what sits behind the numbers.

What moves the price at 40

Two things drive the jump. Mortality odds climb faster after 40, and more applicants have a health history by now: blood pressure medication, a higher BMI, cholesterol. Each of those can move you from preferred to standard, which adds 40 to 50 percent on top of the age increase. The application shows your estimated approval odds before you apply, so you know where you stand.

No-exam coverage is still common at 40 up to $1 million to $2 million when prescription and driving records are clean. Controlled blood pressure or cholesterol on medication does not by itself trigger an exam.

Which term length to choose at 40

A 20-year term at 40 covers you to 60, past most mortgages and through college for children born in your thirties. A 30-year term is available and covers to 70, but costs about 45 percent more; it suits people with young children or a long mortgage. A 15-year term is a sensible compromise for a mortgage with 15 years left. If you are not sure how much coverage you need, the coverage calculator builds the number from your mortgage, income and family, and the Nectar Term application shows your price, approval odds and expected decision time before you apply.
