Term Life Insurance Rates at 35: What You Will Pay

In short

At 35, a healthy non-smoker pays about $34 a month (man) or $28 a month (woman) for $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance with Nectar Term, as an estimate. A 10-year term costs about 28 percent less, a 30-year term about 45 percent more, and $1 million costs less than twice the $500,000 price. Waiting until 40 raises the same coverage to about $47 a month.

Thirty-five is the last year on the flat part of the price curve; after it, every birthday costs more, and by 40 the same coverage runs about 40 percent higher. The table below shows Nectar Term estimates at 35 for three coverage amounts and three term lengths, in the preferred non-tobacco class. Every figure is an estimate; the final premium is set by the issuing insurer during underwriting.

What moves the price at 35

At 35 the preferred price for $500,000 is about $34 a month, only $4 more than at 30. The curve bends after this because the odds of a claim start rising faster. Health class matters as much as age: standard class instead of preferred adds 40 to 50 percent, and tobacco in the last year roughly doubles the price.

No-exam underwriting is still the norm at 35 up to $1 million to $2 million when records are clean. Bring the names of any medications and your doctor; it shortens the review.

Which term length to choose at 35

Most 35-year-olds with children buy 20 or 25 years so the policy outlasts the youngest child's time at home; homeowners early in a 30-year mortgage often take the full 30. A 10-year term makes sense only for a short, specific debt. If you are not sure how much coverage you need, the coverage calculator builds the number from your mortgage, income and family, and the Nectar Term application shows your price, approval odds and expected decision time before you apply.

Frequently asked questions

How much does term life cost at 35?

About $34 a month for a man and $28 for a woman for $500,000 over 20 years in the preferred class, as an estimate. A 30-year term is about 45 percent more; $1 million is less than twice the $500,000 price.

Is 35 too late to get a good rate?

No. Rates at 35 are within a few dollars of rates at 30. The steep part of the curve starts after 40.

Should I buy more coverage now or add later?

Buy what the plan says you need now. Adding later means new underwriting at a higher age and whatever your health is then.

Does a 35-year-old need an exam?

Most do not, up to $1 million to $2 million. An exam is more likely for larger amounts or when records need a closer look.
