In short
At 30, a healthy non-smoker pays about $30 a month (man) or $24 a month (woman) for $500,000 of 20-year term life insurance with Nectar Term, as an estimate. A 10-year term costs about 28 percent less, a 30-year term about 45 percent more, and $1 million costs less than twice the $500,000 price. Waiting until 35 raises the same coverage to about $34 a month.
Thirty is the age most people buy their first real policy, usually within a year of a mortgage or a baby, and the price is still on the flat part of the curve. The table below shows Nectar Term estimates at 30 for three coverage amounts and three term lengths, in the preferred non-tobacco class. Every figure is an estimate; the final premium is set by the issuing insurer during underwriting.

| Coverage | Term | Man | Woman |

| $250,000 | 20 years | $16 | $13 |
| $250,000 | 30 years | $24 | $19 |
| $500,000 | 10 years | $22 | $17 |
| $500,000 | 20 years | $30 | $24 |
| $500,000 | 30 years | $44 | $35 |
| $1,000,000 | 10 years | $40 | $32 |
| $1,000,000 | 20 years | $56 | $44 |
| $1,000,000 | 30 years | $80 | $64 |
Women pay about 18 percent less than men at every age because they live longer on average. Published averages from NerdWallet and MoneyGeek for comparable applicants fall in the same range; our full guide to term life insurance cost explains what sits behind the numbers.
What moves the price at 30
Between 25 and 35 the preferred price for $500,000 moves by a few dollars a month. What moves it more at 30 is health class: a blood pressure reading, a weight that drifted up, or nicotine in the last year can turn a $30 estimate into $45. The table assumes the preferred non-tobacco class; the application shows your own approval odds before you commit.
Most 30-year-olds qualify without an exam up to $1 million to $2 million. The decision is often the same day when prescription and driving records are clean.

Which term length to choose at 30
Match the term to the longest obligation. A 30-year mortgage or a newborn points to 30 years; a 15-year loan or children already in school points to 20. Many families at 30 buy a 30-year policy for the mortgage amount and a 20-year policy for income replacement, which costs less than one large 30-year policy. If you are not sure how much coverage you need, the coverage calculator builds the number from your mortgage, income and family, and the Nectar Term application shows your price, approval odds and expected decision time before you apply.

Frequently asked questions
How much life insurance should a 30-year-old have?
Enough to replace income for the years your family would need it, pay off the mortgage, and fund each child's education, minus what you have through work. For many families that is $500,000 to $1.5 million; the calculator builds the number from your own figures.
Is a 20- or 30-year term better at 30?
A 30-year term covers you to 60, past most mortgages and children. It costs about 45 percent more than 20 years. If budget is tight, 20 years for the full amount beats 30 years for too little.
Can I get coverage at 30 without a medical exam?
Usually, up to $1 million to $2 million for healthy applicants, with a decision the same day in many cases.
What if my health changes after I buy?
Nothing changes. The premium and the coverage are locked for the term regardless of later diagnoses.
