In short
Final expense insurance costs about $53.97 a month for a 65-year-old man and $40.77 for a woman buying $10,000 of coverage that pays in full from day one, using the cheaper of Mutual of Omaha's Living Promise and Transamerica's Immediate Solution at that age. A policy with no health questions costs about a third more. The tables below are computed from both carriers' rate guides for ages 50 to 85.
A full-service funeral with burial in Ohio runs about $8,000 before the cemetery plot and marker, and a cremation with a service about $5,700 (Funeralocity, 2025; the NFDA national median is similar), which is why $10,000 to $15,000 is the usual final expense amount. The policies below are simplified-issue whole life: a short health questionnaire, no exam, a fixed premium for life. The right question is not "which company" but "which class can I qualify for", because the level benefit at one carrier beats the graded benefit at the other by a wide margin.

The Nectar application prices final expense coverage in about two minutes: pick the amount, answer the health questions once, and it shows the monthly cost and which insurer and class you qualify for before you commit to anything.
Level, graded, guaranteed: which one you will be offered
- Level benefit (Living Promise level, Immediate Solution preferred or standard): full amount from day one. Needs clean answers to the health questions; treated, stable conditions usually pass.
- Graded benefit (Living Promise graded, Transamerica Easy Solution): for a natural death in the first two years, premiums plus 10 percent; full amount after. For health histories that fail the level questions.
- Guaranteed issue, no health questions (Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life): ages 45 to 85, graded two years. The fallback when nothing else will issue.
The carrier pages have every age and amount: Mutual of Omaha Living Promise, Mutual of Omaha Guaranteed Whole Life and Transamerica Immediate Solution. Our guides to life insurance over 60 and over 50 cover the larger policies that still make sense at those ages.

Frequently asked questions
How much does final expense insurance cost per month?
For $10,000 of day-one coverage, about $35.95 at 55, $53.97 at 65, $97.30 at 75 and $192.74 at 85 for a man, using the cheaper of the two carriers above. Women pay less at every age.
Is burial insurance the same as final expense insurance?
Yes. Both names describe a small whole life policy, usually $5,000 to $25,000, sold with simplified or guaranteed underwriting, meant to cover a funeral and last bills.
Do I need a medical exam for final expense insurance?
No. These policies are simplified issue (health questions, no exam) or guaranteed issue (no questions).
Which company is cheapest for final expense insurance?
It depends on age, sex and health class. Mutual of Omaha and Transamerica trade the lowest level-benefit price by age; the tables above show both. The class you qualify for matters more than the carrier.
Is final expense insurance worth it?
If you are over 60 or cannot get term coverage, yes: it is the simplest way to make sure a funeral does not land on your family. If you are younger and healthy, a 20-year term policy of $100,000 often costs less than $15,000 of final expense coverage.
Nectar Term policies are issued by Nectar's partner insurers, each rated A or better by A.M. Best, and serviced by Nectar. Prices in this article are estimates calibrated to published 2026 averages and are not an offer of coverage. Final rates are set during underwriting.
